How to choose, step by step

Take your time. A good fiduciary will welcome your questions.

01

Know what you need

A trust, a conservatorship, an estate or help with daily bills. If you're not sure, a fiduciary can tell you on the first call.

02

Search the directory

Find PFAC members near you and the services each one offers.

03

Check the license

Confirm the license with the Professional Fiduciaries Bureau before you sign anything.

Questions to ask before you choose

Ask them on the first call. Write the answers down, so the family can compare.

Are you licensed, and may I see your license number?

Every professional fiduciary in California must hold a license from the Professional Fiduciaries Bureau. You can check it yourself in a minute.

Which of these roles do you take on?

Some fiduciaries focus on trusts and estates, others on conservatorships or daily money management. Ask what most of their work is.

How do you charge?

Ask for the hourly rates or fees in writing, and how often you will receive a statement.

How will you keep the family informed?

Agree on how often you'll hear from them, by phone, email or a written report.

Who steps in if you're away?

Ask who covers urgent matters when they're on leave or out of town.

Ready to look?

Search PFAC's member directory, or call the business office and we'll point you in the right direction.
